NORTH CAROLINA GENERAL ASSEMBLY

1967 SESSION

CHAPTER 1125

SENATE BILL 260

AN ACT PROVIDING THAT THE CANOVA STATUE OF GEORGE WASHINGTON BE PLACED IN THE ROTUNDA OF THE NORTH CAROLINA CAPITOL BUILDING.

WHEREAS, the State of North Carolina in 1816 commissioned the celebrated Italian sculptor, Antonia Canova, to design and sculpt a statue in Carrara marble of George Washington for the North Carolina State House; and

WHEREAS, the coming to North Carolina of this statue was an event of international importance, a United States battleship being sent to Italy to bring it to America; and

WHEREAS, the statue was burned when the State House burned in 1831 and only multilated portions now remain; and

WHEREAS, the final "pointing up" model for this statute is now in the Canova Museum in Possagno, Italy, and a statue can be re-created in Carrara marble for North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, the rotunda of our present Capitol building was planned for the reception of the restored statue, the stairs in the original plan being removed to the halls in order that nothing should detract from the effect of this statue; and

WHEREAS, the George Washington Statue Commission consisting of 15 members appointed by the Governor and three ex officio members was established in 1964 for the purpose of securing through non-State sources funds for this re-created statue for the rotunda of our State Capitol: Now, therefore,

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

Section 1.  That the Canova statue of George Washington, when completed, shall be placed in the rotunda of the North Carolina Capitol Building.

Sec. 2.  All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 3.  This Act shall be in full force and effect from and after its ratification.

In the General Assembly read three times and ratified, this the 5th day of July, 1967.
