AN ACT TO PROVIDE FOR THE NOMINATION AND ELECTION OF THE MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF ONSLOW COUNTY.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina do enact:

 

Section 1. The County Board of Education for Onslow County shall consist of seven members, to be elected by the voters of the county as herein provided, who shall serve for a term of four years. The term of office of each member shall begin on the first Monday in December, next succeeding his election, and shall continue until a successor has been elected and qualified.

Sec. 2. In the primary election to be held in Onslow County in 1968, there shall be nominated by each political party in the party primaries at the same time and in the same general manner as that in which other county officers are nominated four candidates for nomination as members of the Board of Education of Onslow County. The nominees residing in the Jacksonville Township and Richlands Township who shall receive the highest number of votes in the respective primaries shall be declared nominated. The two nominees in the respective party primaries receiving the next highest number of votes, regardless of which township in which he resides, shall be declared nominated. The names of the persons so nominated by each political party shall be placed on the official county ballots of Onslow County, and shall be voted upon by the qualified voters of the county at large in the general election of 1968.

Sec. 3. In the primary election to be held in 1970, there shall be nominated by each political party in the party primaries at the same time and in the same general manner as that in which other county officers are nominated three candidates for nomination as members of the Board of Education of Onslow County. The nominees residing in White Oak Township, Swansboro Township, and Stump Sound Township who shall receive the highest number of votes in the respective primaries shall be declared nominated. The names of the persons so nominated by each political party shall be placed on the official county ballots of Onslow County, and shall be voted upon by the qualified voters of the county at large in the general election of 1970; and quadrennially thereafter, from the same districts or at large, members of the Board of Education who are candidates to succeed the members whose terms shall expire shall be elected for a term of four years.

Sec. 4. Vacancies in the membership of the Board of Education, for any cause, shall be filled immediately by the County Executive Committee of the political party of the member causing such vacancy. The person appointed shall serve for the unexpired term and shall be a resident of the district in which such vacancy occurs.

Sec. 5. All laws and clauses of laws in conflict with this Act are hereby repealed.

Sec. 6. This Act shall be in full force and effect from and after its ratification.
