HOUSE BILL 168

 

 

AN ACT TO MAKE AN EXCEPTION TO THE MEDICAL PRACTICE ACT RELATING TO CERTAIN ACTS OF NURSES.

 

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

 

Section 1.  G.S. 90-18 is hereby amended by adding a new subsection (14) to read as follows:

"(14)    The practice of nursing by a registered nurse engaged in the practice of nursing and the performance of acts otherwise constituting medical practice by a registered nurse when performed in accordance with rules and regulations developed by a joint subcommittee of the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Nursing and adopted by both boards."

Sec. 2.  G.S. 90-6 is hereby amended by adding at the end thereof a new paragraph as follows:

"The Board of Medical Examiners shall appoint and maintain a subcommittee to work jointly with a subcommittee of the Board of Nursing to develop rules and regulations to govern the performance of medical acts by registered nurses. Rules and regulations developed by this subcommittee from time to time shall govern the performance of medical acts by registered nurses and shall become effective when adopted by both the Board of Medical Examiners and the Board of Nursing. The Board of Medical Examiners shall have responsibility for securing compliance with these regulations."

Sec. 3.  This act shall become effective upon ratification.
