A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to appropriate funds to establish three new district court judges and supporting staff in district court district 18 and two new assistant district attorneys in prosecutorial district 18.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. G.S. 7A-133(a) reads as rewritten:
"(a) Each district court district shall have the numbers of judges as set forth in the following table:

SECTION 2. The Governor shall appoint the additional district court judges for District 18 authorized by this act, and those judges' successors shall be elected in the 2006 general election for four-year terms commencing on the first Monday in December 2006.
SECTION 3. G.S. 7A-60(a1) reads as rewritten:
"(a1) The counties of the State are organized into prosecutorial districts, and each district has the counties and the number of full-time assistant district attorneys set forth in the following table:

SECTION 4.(a) There is appropriated from the General Fund to the Judicial Department the sum of three hundred twenty thousand three hundred sixty-four dollars ($320,364) for the 2005-2006 fiscal year and the sum of two hundred eighty-nine thousand five hundred twelve dollars ($289,512) for the 2006-2007 fiscal year to establish the three new district court judges authorized by this act.
SECTION 4.(b) There is appropriated from the General Fund to the Judicial Department the sum of one hundred twenty-six thousand thirty-six dollars ($126,036) for the 2005-2006 fiscal year and the sum of one hundred sixteen thousand seven hundred fourteen dollars ($116,714) for the 2006-2007 fiscal year to establish the two new assistant district attorneys authorized by this act.
SECTION 4.(c) There is appropriated from the General Fund to the Judicial Department the sum of one hundred sixteen thousand four hundred nine dollars ($116,409) for the 2005-2006 fiscal year and the sum of one hundred four thousand eight hundred nine dollars ($104,809) for the 2006-2007 fiscal year to establish three deputy clerk positions and a judicial assistant position to provide the necessary staffing for the new judicial positions authorized by this act.
SECTION 5. This act becomes effective October 1, 2005, or the date upon which Section 1 of this act is approved under section 5 of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, whichever is later.
