A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT authorizing local governments to adopt ordinances to regulate trade and labor and to establish or reestablish programs to prohibit discrimination in employment.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.(a)  Article 8 of Chapter 160A of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

"§ 160A‑201.  Nondiscrimination ordinances.

A municipality may adopt ordinances to establish or reestablish programs to prohibit discrimination in employment or otherwise regulate trade and labor."

SECTION 1.(b)  Article 7 of Chapter 153A of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

"§ 153A‑455.  Nondiscrimination ordinances.

A county may adopt ordinances to establish or reestablish programs to prohibit discrimination in employment or otherwise regulate trade or labor."

SECTION 2.(a)  G.S. 160A‑209(c) is amended by adding a new subdivision to read:

"(21a)  Nondiscrimination. – To establish and maintain programs authorized by G.S. 160A‑201."

SECTION 2.(b)  G.S. 153A‑149(c) is amended by adding a new subdivision to read:

"(22a)  Nondiscrimination. – To establish and maintain programs authorized by G.S. 153A‑455."

SECTION 3.  This act is effective when it becomes law.
