A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT appropriating funds to develop and implement a high school pilot program focusing on critical foreign languages and FOREIGN and international affairs.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. There is appropriated from the General Fund to the Department of Public Instruction the sum of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) for the 2009‑2010 fiscal year and the sum of five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) for the 2010‑2011 fiscal year to establish and implement a high school pilot program focusing on critical foreign languages and foreign and international affairs in two local school administrative units.
The State Board of Education, with the assistance of the Department of Public Instruction, shall select two pilot local school administrative units. Up to two high schools in each pilot unit shall implement the program. Classes shall begin in the first semester of the 2010‑2011 school year.
The State Board of Education shall approve the curriculum for the pilot program on an expedited basis.
SECTION 2. This act becomes effective July 1, 2009.
