A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to strengthen driver education offered through public schools, as RECOMMENDED by the child fatality task force.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  From funds available for driver education, the Superintendent of Public Instruction shall establish one full‑time position in the Department of Public Instruction to oversee the Driver Education Program, established pursuant to G.S. 20‑88.1. The duties of this position are to enhance driver education based on the results of new studies and the implementation of new technologies, to coordinate educational efforts with the Division of Motor Vehicles, and to collaborate with the State Highway Patrol and other agencies and organizations in the implementation of driver safety training programs.

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective July 1, 2009.
