A HOUSE RESOLUTION Honoring the two hundred thirty‑seventh anniversary of the Battle of alamance.
Whereas, a few years prior to the American Revolution, frontier people living in the western portions of colonial North Carolina became increasingly upset with how local government officials were handling the colony's affairs; and
Whereas, many people believed they were being subjected to excessive taxes and illegal fees and were being treated badly by corrupt officials; and
Whereas, unable to get resolution through peaceful means, a group of backcountry farmers known as Regulators began resorting to violence and openly refusing to pay certain fees; and
Whereas, a prominent member of the Regulators included Hermon Husbands, a Quaker who represented Orange County in the North Carolina Assembly which met in New Bern; and
Whereas, as Regulators increased their actions, Governor William Tryon was asked to call out the militia to end the rebellion; and
Whereas, Governor Tryon and his troops engaged in battle with the Regulators near the Alamance Creek on May 16, 1771, after the Regulators refused to disband peacefully; and
Whereas, the Regulators were not prepared for an organized and heavily armed militia and were defeated during the battle, thus ending their rebellion; and
Whereas, today, the Alamance Battleground is a State historic site where visitors can learn about colonial life by viewing the battlefield and touring the preserved Allen House, a home typical of those built in that era; and
Whereas, May 16, 2008, marks the 237th Anniversary of the Battle of Alamance, an anniversary worthy of recognition and celebration; Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
SECTION 1. The House of Representatives honors those who fought during the Battle of Alamance and encourages the citizens of this State to take part in activities commemorating the 237th anniversary of this historic event.
SECTION 2. The Principal Clerk shall transmit a certified copy of this resolution to the Alamance Battleground State Historic Site.
SECTION 3. This resolution is effective upon adoption.
