JOIN OUR POLICE FORCE

The Police Officer I position provides security and protection for legislators, staff, visitors, and property on the state legislative complex and throughout the state during special events. The Police Officer I position works under the direction of the Police Sergeant, or another lead officer.

Our initiative is to create an environment where people can safely work and visit free from fear and disruption. The General Assembly Police proactively provides a visible deterrent to criminal activity, responds to emergencies, and works closely with other law enforcement agencies. All of our police officers are sworn and have statewide authority to investigate crimes and make arrest.

Examples of duties:

  • Investigates criminal violations and suspicious activities and makes arrests or notifies other law enforcement personnel when necessary.
  • Patrols legislative complex grounds and building facilities to enforce laws and regulations and to prevent theft, trespass, vandalism, or other criminal activities.
  • Enforces parking regulations and controls traffic flow on complex grounds.
  • Assists with crowd control efforts.
  • Provides dignitary protection and coordinates such activities with other law enforcement personnel.
  • Provides information, directions, and other assistance to legislators, legislative staff, state officials, and the public.
  • Responds to emergency calls.
  • Monitors alarm and surveillance camera computer systems.
  • Performs related law enforcement duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
  • Basic knowledge of law enforcement concepts, practices, theories, technologies, and problem solving techniques.
  • Must be able to pass the Police Officers Physical Agility Test (POPAT) twice a year.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and under pressure with legislators, legislative staff, and the public on a daily basis.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to perform daily tasks and assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to follow department policies and procedures.
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Willingness and ability to work extra hours when required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • Successful completion of North Carolina's Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET).
  • General certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions established by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina motor vehicle operator's license.

JOIN OUR SECURITY FORCE

The General Assembly is offering a unique opportunity for individuals interested in assisting the General Assembly Police Department in providing protection for legislators, legislative staff, other government officials, and the general public. Security Screeners provide for the security and protection of personnel and property inside the legislative building and the legislative complex. Security Screeners work under the direction of the Police Lieutenant, or another lead officer. Recurring tasks and assignments are carried out without specific instruction. There is opportunity for advancement for Security Screeners interested in becoming a police officer with the General Assembly Police Department.

Examples of duties:

  • Ensures the security and safety of all visitors, staff, and legislators, and the legislative building/complex by monitoring screening equipment and access points.
  • Operates various screening devices including magnetometers, detection wands, and x-ray machines at security checkpoints throughout the legislative complex.
  • Checks visitor's bags and parcels for non-compliant items.
  • Monitors and controls access at building entrances and vehicle gates.
  • Uses interpersonal skills and directive behaviors to ensure security screening procedures are followed by all visitors in an orderly and professional manner.
  • Provides customer service for visitors, staff, and legislators. This is to include directions, information, and other routine questions.
  • Notifies the General Assembly Police of any violations of law or building rules.
  • Assists the General Assembly Police with various enforcement and security duties as requested.
  • Provides limited assistance on medical emergency calls.
  • Performs related duties as required.
