A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
AN ACT to make it unlawful for any business to require that a licensed driver relinquish his or her drivers license.
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:
SECTION 1. Article 2A of Chapter 75 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:
"§ 75-62.1. Drivers license protection.
(a) A business may not require that a person licensed to operate a motor vehicle surrender or relinquish his or her drivers license to the business for any purpose except as provided by subsection (b) of this section.
(b) A business may request and copy a person's drivers license but shall return the drivers license to the person immediately after making the copy.
(c) A violation of this section is a violation of G.S. 75-1.1."
SECTION 2. This act is effective October 1, 2011.
