Short Title:        Record of Excusals from Jury Duty.

A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to provide that the names and addresses of persons excused from jury duty BASED ON DISQUALIFICATION shall be retained by the clerk of superior court for not less than two years.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  Article 1 of Chapter 9 of the General Statutes is amended by adding a new section to read:

"§ 9‑6.2.  Records of excusals from jury duty based on disqualification.

The name and address of each person who requests to be excused from jury duty on the basis that he or she is not qualified to serve as a juror under G.S. 9‑3, along with the reason for that request, shall be retained by the clerk of superior court for not less than two years from the date of excusal and shall be a public record as defined in G.S. 132‑1, except that medical information submitted to establish that an individual is not physically or mentally competent need not be retained by the clerk and shall not be made public."

SECTION 2.  G.S. 9‑6(e) reads as rewritten:

"(e)       The judge shall inform the clerk of superior court of persons excused under this section, and the clerk shall keep a record of excuses separate from the master jury list.list in accordance with G.S. 9‑6.2."

SECTION 3.  This act becomes effective July 1, 2015.
